Pronounce English Words Correctly in 4 Simple Steps

Read Review On Pronounce English Words Correctly in 4 Simple Steps

Knowing how to pronounce English words correctly every time is not easy! I commonly hear words like "colleague," "purchase," "hippopotamus," "refrigerator", and yes, even "pronunciation" mispronounced.

To pronounce English words correctly, you need to take four important factors into consideration:

1. Syllables
How many syllables (beats) are in the word? Where are the syllable breaks?

For example:
col.league (2)
pur.chase (2)
hip.po.pot.a.mus (5)
re.fri.ger.a.tor (5)
pro.nun.ci.a.tion (5)

2. Word Stress
After you've determined how many syllables a word has, you'll need to decide which syllable should be emphasized more than the others. Word stress is extremely important in the correct pronunciation of words because improper word stress is one of the main reasons why you'll be misunderstood.

For example:
COL.league
PUR.chase
hip.po.POT.a.mus
re.FRI.ger.a.tor
pro.nun.ci.A.tion

3. Sound Production
To pronounce words correctly, of course you need to be able to produce the sounds that make up the words! At the same time, you must remember that when individual sounds are put together in words, and words are linked together in sentences, the individual sounds can easily change.

One of the most common changes is called "vowel reduction." Vowel reduction is what happens to many vowels when they are not part of the stressed syllable of a word. The normal vowel sound changes (is reduced) to something that sounds like "uh." This sound is called the "schwa" in phonetics and its phonetic symbol is an upside down, lower case letter "E."

Here are some examples of vowel reduction. Notice how the schwa sound appears in the unstressed syllables:
PUR.chuhs
hip.puh.POT.uh.muhs
re.FRI.guhr.a.tuhr
pruh.nun.ci.A.shuhn

4. Repetition
In the case of pronunciation, practice doesn't necessarily make perfect. If you pronounce the word incorrectly every time you say it, you'll only make your incorrect pronunciation more pronounced (no pun intented). Before you begin to practice saying the word, be sure to find out the correct pronunciation. Check online dictionaries, a good pronunciation audio course, or ask a very trusted speaker to say the word for you.

Once you are 100% sure of the correct pronunciation, then it's time to practice. Try repeating the word while looking in a mirror and audio recording yourself. Watch the way your mouth moves to make the different sounds. Listen to the recording and compare it to the model pronunciation. Then, just keep working at it.

If you put some effort into how you pronounce words, you'll notice an immediate decrease in the number of misunderstandings you have with others. You'll also find that your awareness is raised and you'll pay more attention to the pronunciation of words around you, either by friends and colleagues, or pronunciations you hear on the radio or TV.

When you hear words pronounced differently than you would normally pronounce them, write them down and go through these four steps to learn how to pronounce English words correctly.

Simple No Bake Chocolate Macaroon Recipe

Looking For Simple No Bake Chocolate Macaroon Recipe

This recipe was a favorite of my sister and I. We loved it when my mom would make these. When we were old enough to cook, the house always smelled like chocolate macaroons. I think we made this recipe about a couple of times a week. They are very easy to make and super yummy to eat! Another thing I like about this recipe is that you don't use a lot of dishes, so clean-up is a breeze as well. These cookies are great if you are in a pinch and need to make something delicious in a hurry. Another great thing is the ingredient list is very short and most things I'm sure you will be able to find in your very own kitchen.

I hope you enjoy making these macaroons as much as I know you will enjoy eating them.

What you need to make the macaroons:

2 cups granulated sugar

1/2 cup butter

1/2 cup milk

6 tbsp cocoa

1/2 cup fine shredded coconut

3 cups oatmeal

1-2 cookie sheets waxed paper

1. Combine the first four ingredients together in a large pot and bring to a boil for about 2-3 minutes, stirring constantly.

2. Take pot off of stove and add the coconut and oatmeal. Mix until everything is coated.

3. Place on a wax paper lined cookie sheet by heaping tablespoon-fulls. To have these cookies ready quickly, cool in refrigerator, or leave and let cool to room temp.

Enjoy!

Note: You may need to double batch these cookies as they will disappear fast!!!!
